We’ve had a lot of messages on social media about if there’s any chance people could be a risk of getting Toxic Shock Syndrome from Modibodi period panties – so we thought we’d give you all the information you need here.
So can you get TSS from period panties? In short: No.
Toxic Shock Syndrome is a condition caused by a build-up of bacterial toxins including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. This build up is commonly associated with the use of tampons and one theory as to why your chances of getting TSS increases with tampons is because the bacteria naturally present in the vagina can “over-grow” in the presence of a blood soaked tampon.
That’s why plugging the bacteria with an absorbent tampon is significantly more dangerous (in terms of bacteria build-up) than letting blood fall freely and sit on a pad or period pants. When the blood is external to the body it physically can’t be the root cause of Toxic Shock Syndrome.
Additionally, most period underwear (ours included) is designed to wick moisture away from the body, keeping things at a safe distance and allowing for exceptional hygiene during your period.

Worried about using period panties when you’re prone to frequent yeast infections?
Well, the fabric in leak-proof underwear is so much more breathable than the plastic materials found in most disposable pads. That means that period underwear, being the more natural option, won’t contribute to an overgrowth of yeast.
