Kristy's thoughts on the upcoming 2016 Election

Kristy's thoughts on the upcoming 2016 Election

We take time with Modibodi CEO and Founder, Kristy Chong to get her open thoughts on the upcoming federal election in Australia.

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE MAIN ISSUES IN THIS ELECTION?

It has been nice to see that the issue of climate change has remained an important election issue. Other issues like tax and superannuation, one suggesting to decrease super, the other party suggesting to decrease personal taxes has also received lots of coverage. The other issues I have heard a lot about include housing affordability, education and economic management.

WHAT IS MISSING FROM THIS ELECTION IN TERMS OF POLICIES OR SCOPE?

The core issue that's missing from this election, but is truly vital for gender equality is a focus on affordable childcare services.

WHAT POLICIES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE TO GROW THE REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN  & MOTHERS IN THE WORKFORCE?

When I had my third child I was on a waitlist for 18 months before I was able to get more than 1 day a week in a good childcare facility for my third child. Because of the lack of options I had to hire a nanny to allow me to continue to build my business. So while more high-quality, affordable childcare facilities are needed, there should also be a rebate available for families using a nanny. A nanny also gives more flexibility to women in the workforce who require additional care and allows the child to have one-on-one caring, which I believe is especially important for young children.

WHAT POLICIES WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE TO ASSIST WOMEN IN NEED?

I think it is a disgrace that products like tampons, pads and Modibodi underwear are subjected to GST, this is unfair and sexist. If the Government refuses to end the GST on feminine hygiene products then the money should at least be directed to assist women in need. That annual revenue raising of $25M would be surely welcomed by refugees and charities like Share the Dignity who are trying to improve the lives of women in need.
